The Regional Programme Board

The job of the Regional Programme Board is to make sure the ideas in Valuing People Now happen in the North East.

Important ideas in Valuing People Now are:

1. Personalisation

Choice and control over your life.

2. Things to do

In the day, evenings and weekends, and more paid work.

3. Better health care

At hospital, from your GP and any extra healthcare you need.

4. A good place to live

Including the chance to buy or rent a home.

5. Important idea number 5 is that these things should happen, not just for a few people, but for every person with a learning disability.

The Regional Program Board will meet four times a year and will hold 4 meetings a year for representatives to prepare for the meetings.

Jane Mackay is your Regional Program Board Representative and Helen Gibbs is your Vice Representative, this means she will cover for Jane if she is sick or on holiday.

Please get in touch if you would like Jane Mackay to take a question or an idea to the Regional Programme Board.

Valuing People Now: From Progress to Transformation

Valuing People was written six years ago in 2001. Its aim was to help people with learning disabilities live good and full lives. Other Government policies (like Improving the Life Chances of Disabled People) have also helped with this.

Since then, a lot has happened to improve the lives of people with a learning disability.

Some people have more control over their lives, are listened to more, live in better places and do more interesting things.

But some people’s lives are still the same as before.

So the Government has decided it is time to take a new look at Valuing People. We want to see what we can do to make sure that things change for the better for everyone.

Valuing People Now: From Progress to Transformation says what the Government wants to happen with Valuing People for the next three years.

It does not change the Valuing People policy – which will keep on being Government policy about the lives of people with learning disabilities. People tell us it is still a good policy and we agree.

Valuing People Now does three things:

  • It adds new bits of policy where it is needed
  • It says what the big priorities are for the next 3 years
  • It says what should be done so that Valuing People happens for everyone.

Valuing People was about children and adults with a learning disability. Since then, there have been lots of other new policies about children and new things are happening. So, Valuing People Now is only about adults with a learning disability (including transition, this means when young people become adults.

The Big Priorities

We want Valuing People to keep on being about all parts of people’s lives. But we think there are some really big priorities – things everyone should do more about. So, we want everyone to do a lot more about these four things:

  1. People having more choice and control over their lives and services and being listened to more, (Personalisation)
  2. What people do in the days and evenings – including getting a paid job
  3. People being healthy and getting a good service from the NHS
  4. People having more choices about where they live.

There is one other really important thing to do – make sure that Valuing People Now happens for everyone.

Self Directed Support and Families.

The Valuing People Support Team have made a newsletter called Self Directd Support and Families that aims to give families some information about personalisation and the different ways that it can help people have more choice and control in their lives.

There is a lot of very helpful information about Direct Payments and Individual Budgets. Also some very interesting stories from people already using self directed support.
