Best Practice Awards 2007/08

In the category - Change and Innovation

The Third Degree Inspectors are

WINNERS!

The Government White Paper Valuing People said that Councils had to make sure that people with learning disabilities were included in the work of Learning Disability Partnership Boards. The aim of the Third Degree Inspection project was to build on this and go a step further in enabling true involvement of people with a learning disability in the monitoring and quality of in house services.

Inspections are carried out by a team of 3 supported inspectors and last 2 days, the inspectors then produce a report on their findings and assign an overall star rating for the service.

under the category of 'People's Experience'

The Third Degree Inspectors receive their third award of 2008.

Endorsed by the Health Care Commission, the Department of Health and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement had this to say about the Third Degree Inspectors.

"The role has increased people's confidence and given them a sense of responsibility and purpose. Many others now wish to get involved. The project provides an innovative and inclusive model of monitoring quality that can be expanded to other services. It has led to many tangible improvements in the quality of service provision and demonstrates true involvement of service users".

The idea behind the Third Degree Inspections came from the members of the Northumberland Forum for people with a Learning Disability. The members would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported their work.

This was a team effort, and even though not everyone was able to make it to the awards ceremony in London this award belongs to everyone who was involved.

Spiral Skills Advocacy Service hosts an event to celebrate the success of the Third Degree Inspectors

Coming together to share their good news and celebrate their success. The Third Degree Inspectors held an event at the offices of Learning First, a charity that provides education and training to people with learning difficulties.

We watched a film made by the Third Degree Inspectors about inspecting services and what it's like to be an inspector. We swapped stories and enjoyed meeting new people. We hope that some of the people we met will visit our User Forum meetings.
